By Jessica Ravitz
CNN

(CNN) -- The box office fright flick "The Haunting in Connecticut" earned $23 million and a second-place ranking the first weekend of its release, satiating the moviegoer appetite for psychological thrills.

Carmen Reed's family lived in a former funeral home. Their stories inspired "The Haunting in Connecticut."

But what is entertainment for many was reportedly true life for Carmen Reed, who insists on using her maiden name to protect her children and grandchildren.

Reed, her husband and four children rented an old colonial home in Southington, Connecticut, in the mid-1980s in order to be close to a hospital where her 13-year-old son was receiving cancer treatment. Soon after, two nieces also joined them in the house that they learned had once been a funeral home.

It wasn't long before that son began telling stories about noises he'd heard and visions he'd seen, including the one of the "tall, thin man with long jet-black hair" whom the boy said he saw every night, Reed said.

"I was the biggest skeptic of all," she explained. "I put my son in a mental hospital because I didn't believe him." Watch Reed talk about life in a haunted house »

Reed sat down with CNN to talk about the spooky stories that later became her own and how what her family experienced inspired a blockbuster film.

CNN: Tell me more about sending your son to a mental institution, where he arrived in a straitjacket and where you say he stayed for 45 days. Why did you do this, and what happened next?

Don't Miss
Ghosts stay clear of 'Haunting' actress
Carmen Reed: At first I thought it was his cancer treatment. ... I took him to a psychologist, but he got darker and darker. And this one time, he got so bad, he attacked my niece. ... An ambulance came and took him to a mental hospital. ... He was saying, "Mom, don't leave me! It's going to come after you now." And it did.

CNN: You mentioned seeing a hand that grasped your niece and that mop water would turn a deep, dark red. What are some other things you saw or heard?

Reed: Mattresses would breathe. They had a pulse. ... There was the normal banging on walls, but it always came in threes. ... There was a deep, gravelly voice.

CNN: And yet you stayed for two years! If what you were experiencing didn't drive you to move away, what did?

Reed: I couldn't go to the grocery store without people telling me their ghost stories. I was usually there for three hours.

CNN: You talk about how you read from the Bible in an attempt to drive away demons. How did your experiences in this home influence your faith?

Reed: I've learned that most people just believe in this physical world. Some people question if there is a God or angels or demons. I don't need to question that. I found that answer in this house.

CNN: Are you still haunted by your experiences in that home?

Reed: I do dream about it, and I remember things, but one of the biggest mottos I have is "Be not afraid." When people are afraid to go somewhere, I'll go into the deepest, darkest part of it because I know I'm not alone.

CNN: You've consulted on this new film and are writing a book about your story. Why do you insist on using your maiden name?

Reed: To protect my children. ... My daughter was more scarred by the publicity than she was by the house. And I have 11 grandchildren, and I want to protect them.

CNN: What lesson do you hope people will take away from the film and the increased exposure to what you experienced in that Connecticut home?

Reed: Leave the occult alone. You think you can control it, but it's going to backfire on you.

!!!BUT!!! When things like that lhappen in a house.....NOBODY and i repeat !!!NOBODY!!!
lives in that house for two years.....TWO YEARS!!?? This bitch just has a psychotic son and found a way to get famouse for it. FUCK a straight jacket....my son attacks his FEMALE cousin with the intension of trully harming her and he'll be a crippled mother fucker. I know that sounds harsh but thats something you just don't do. now shes trying to say that type of stuff dont scare her.....cooome on. shes only saying that cuz nobody can prove it does. I dont scare easily. Im not a badass or nothin but Im quick to run up on a dude I KNOW is gonna woop my ass.....but id prolly shit my pants if that kinda stuff happened. with that said.

IF stuff like that happens.....why does it only happen when nobody else is around? And how come its NEVER been proven?
point to ponder. Oh yeah?

LOL ya'll some funny fools..... this subject is more akin to the beatles fans vs. elvis fans of long ago either your an elvis fan or your a beatles fan, am not saying you cannot like both however you DO like one more than the other, kinda like our views on religion. By the way i'm such an elvis fan, thank ya, thank ya very much.... now getting back to the point at hand, say you're a person who believes in god, or gods or a higher power what have you, you by definition have to believe in ghosts, destiny, karma, astrology, angels, demons, poltergeists, luck, fate, possession, exorcism so forth and so on because if you partially believe that some invisible entity somewhere is pulling your strings of fate, leading you toward righteousness, protecting you from evil then as a belief system in and of itself the whole realm of that side of the coin exists, period. you cannot choose which to believe in and which you cannot because they are all the same, the greatest trick the devil pulled on mankind was convincing us he doesn't exist. however how can light exist or be without the dark? cannot have one and not the other in this instance i mean son of god cast demons out in the name of the lord so the exist..... and now the beatles arguement..... if you don't believe in ghosts or spirituality as a whole then there is no god. end of story i mean cannot once again pick and chose on this subject it is black and white it is either or cannot have it both ways, which is the problem with today's generation as a whole because they want it all but don't want to work hard to get it they feel they deserve something they haven't earned.... but we'll leave that for another day..... Twisted Evil

i understand wut ur sayin and all but i think ur wrong. i can believe whutever i want. IM AMERICAN but anyway i guesse i should have explained better....i believe in ghost but i believe they walk among us but cant phisicly contact us. i believe in god but DONT believe in fate, luck, or that we r puppets on gods strings. i believe god created the universe and let it evolve and form on its own.i dont believe that the begining was earth. i believe that NOBODY knows exactly how we got here and its wrong to tell someone wut they believe is false. who are u to tell me my religin is wrong and yours is right? how do u know ur religin is right when theres hundreds of religins out there? you dont! all u can do is believe. i also believe that it doesnt matter whos religin is closest to being right. as long as u have faith and trully have a good heart you should be set. the holy bible was written over the years by a bunch of racist woman haters who looked down on ppl for haveing different oppinions about god. do u really believe every word of a book writen by those type of ppl is true. im gonna stop because if i keep goin somebodys gonna get offended.

point to ponder.....
If God made man, who made god?
if you can give me a ligit answer that is believeable other than 'hes always been' ill shut up and u win. Oh yeah?

AGAIN to point out religion wasn't the topic just the case in point. if you're open minded enough to believe in god then logic would dictate that you're also open minded enough to believe that ghosts exist and not knowing anything about them as a whole one cannot truly say just what they can or cannot do.... my arguement wasn't about the religiosity of it all but to point out which side of the fence a person was on.... and don't even get me started on religion as a whole because to me this is a sore subject with the corruption of humankind and not just man kind.... next time do not presume that you are being attacked on a personal level because i am of very strong belief that you are more than entitled to believe in whatever you please, theologically speaking though, me personally i believe in both evolutionary theory and god at the same time.... i know highly dubious position i place myself in. so let me close this by saying i wasn't trying to put down anybodies personal belief system or question the existense of god as a whole or even religion.... was simply stating the most logical conclusion of one side and the other, again no offense to anyone who may have taken my view the wrong way
